The Matador community is so vibrant because of members like Pat, also known as the Digital Vagabond.

Pat, who fell in love with travel at the age of 21 after reading Ed Buryn’s book, Vagabonding in the USA, was inspired to quit school, fix up an old VW van, and start exploring North America. About his first year on the road, he writes:

“I found the ocean, myself and a whole lot more before I came back almost one year later. It was a year of sweet solitude, serendipitous encounters and inspiration.”

And after that first year, he was hooked, a confirmed convert to vagabonding.

Now, more than 20 years later, Pat wants to pay forward the experience of travel that has been so meaningful to him by offering what he’s calling the Roads Scholarship.

If you’re 18 or older and have a valid driver’s license, you’re eligible to apply for the Roads Scholarship. If you win, you’ll be given a $1,200 USD stipend each month from June-September, 2009, and you’ll be able to use share your articles and photos on Pat’s website, Digital Vagabonding. The winner will also be given a ticket to Burning Man, as will two runners-up.

Winners will be chosen in May, so hurry up and check the guidelines here.

    Julie,

Thank you for sharing the news about the upcoming Digital Vagabonding “Roads Scholarship”. Your notice inspired several excellent proposals from some very interesting vagabonds. Some of them were so well traveled they made me feel like a couch potato by comparison.

If anyone would like to view their Roads Scholarship travel proposals or comment on them, visit http://www.digitalvagabonding.com/road-scholarship

We will be accepting proposals until May 8th, 2009 when the winner will be chosen. The winner will then road trip North America this summer and share their journey on Matador and DigitalVagabonding.com

Their Summer Road Trip will officially end at the Burning Man Festival in the Nevada Desert the first week of September.

I encourage fellow vagabonds to follow the Roads Scholar’s journey and meet them in person at the Burning Man Festival.

Ciao for now, Pat the Digital Vagabond

Announcing the Digital Vagabonding Roads Scholars – Class of 2009

This spring we received 101 proposals from aspiring travel writers seeking to road trip North America this summer on a “Roads Scholarship”. It was tough to choose just one winner, so we chose five.

To see who’s been chosen, view their proposals and register to follow their adventures, visit Roads Scholarship at http://www.digitalvagabonding.com/road-scholarship. This years scholarships are being co-sponsored by the outstanding travel community – Matador Travel. Special thanks to Matador and their talented team for helping us promote this scholarship.

Given the talent and vision of these Roads Scholars, I expect they will take us all on an amazing journey.

Whether you travel or not, be well and live large.
