Matador Member Announces the Roads Scholarship
The Matador community is so vibrant because of members like Pat, also known as the Digital Vagabond.
Pat, who fell in love with travel at the age of 21 after reading Ed Buryn’s book, Vagabonding in the USA, was inspired to quit school, fix up an old VW van, and start exploring North America. About his first year on the road, he writes:
“I found the ocean, myself and a whole lot more before I came back almost one year later. It was a year of sweet solitude, serendipitous encounters and inspiration.”
And after that first year, he was hooked, a confirmed convert to vagabonding.

Now, more than 20 years later, Pat wants to pay forward the experience of travel that has been so meaningful to him by offering what he’s calling the Roads Scholarship.
If you’re 18 or older and have a valid driver’s license, you’re eligible to apply for the Roads Scholarship. If you win, you’ll be given a $1,200 USD stipend each month from June-September, 2009, and you’ll be able to use share your articles and photos on Pat’s website, Digital Vagabonding. The winner will also be given a ticket to Burning Man, as will two runners-up.
Winners will be chosen in May, so hurry up and check the guidelines here.
