I'm so sorry I'm seeing this comment so late! I'm going to check out your blog now. I think I definately gained some very transferable skills working in publishing before freelancing that I wouldn't have had otherwise, such as formal copy editing skills. But most importantly, working with freelancers gave me some great insight into the other side of the equation. Feel free to contact me any time!

I disagree. I’m actually constantly amazed at how places, cultures, or people match up to the collective images I’ve received all my life of what they are supposed to be like once I actually go there or get to know them. And I deliberately used Gabriela's words to disagree.

People are different form the collective images whe you are there for justa few weeks. When you live for long in a place, from my experience, they tend to match the collective images we got from them.

That teached me not to be arrogant in thinking all the time that I can have a constantly fresh view on EVERYTHING. I cannot and no one can, cuzz people are the same, and cultures do not change like that. Unless what you have been listening to, reading and watching was lieing to you a hell of a lot!!! Then of COURSE poeple will be VERY different from what you heard they were!

Some peoples/cultures are less flexible to change (most of them) and if my grandparents said Argentines are like this and that, if I live in Argentina for 6 months I will think they are wrong, but if I live there for 2 years at least, I might start to think grandma was right!

This is empirical. This comes from my experience and now, not to hurt myself, I travel with an open heart but aware that ALL stereotypes might just jump on my neck, and I have to know all them to defend myself. In every way.

The other way round is just way naive and those who still wanna believe it are welcome, but please do not complain afterwards.

Hi Gabriela, I enjoyed reading this interview. I work in book publishing now actually and I'm beginning to realize that I would like to pursue a career in travel writing. I have only had my blog for 6 months and am slowly starting to write for other sites but to read your interview is to know that it is possible to transition. Thanks and looking forward to reading more of your work!
