I'd like to pick your brain here (maybe others can benefit :)), I am a GIS professional with only about 5 years experience who was laid off 2 years ago.  I have spent my time off WWOOFing in the southwest of the USA.  However, I love GIS and don't want to stray too far from that field.  I have been doing some volunteer GIS things here and there and I was look for URISA or other regional meetings to attend. How did you get started in the independent consulting business?  What advice would you have for someone starting out?  I still feel very new to the industry and have no programming experience.  I've been trying to learn html/css on my own as well.
