I really can't imagine not flashpacking. After my first ever backpacking trip i switched immediately. Most people i know who have gotten into UL started switching using cheap alternatives and realize they break and fail sometimes in the field and slowly as money is available switch to UL gear which does tend to be more expensive but you also don't need as much. I highly recommend trying it if you haven't already. Great topic and article!

I've never heard of flashpacking before, but I guess it totally makes sense. Actually lots of people are taking this idea outside of the backcountry and traveling the world with little more than a day pack. I can travel light, but with just a day pack? I don't know. That's hardcore!

Ray Jardine’s is amazing every back packer should read it. It will shave more weight out of your pack than you ever thought possible.

Not impressed. You obviously wrote about a topic of which you have little to no experience, otherwise you wouldn't have recommended such non-UL gear choices. UL is also a lot more about simplifying gear, and making up for it with skills. For those interested, started reading here or here.

Great read. If your interested in fast packing or Ultralight backpacking check out backpackinglight.com all the information you will ever need. I've recently got my base weight down to 8 lbs for 3 season hiking and 4lbs for the summer.
