Golan Heights are a really fascinating area. Wine buffs should visit the award winning Chateau Golan. Stay at the Kfar Blum kibbutz. You can read our writer's account of her recent journey to Golan here. comments welcome.

Enjoyed the piece -- lots of new places to add to my travel wish list! -- but the description of the boat trip in Istanbul seemed a bit confusing/misleading to me as an expat resident. The trip you describe indeed starts near where the Golden Horn, Bosphorus, and Marmara all meet, in Eminönü, but it goes *along* the Bosphorus, not the the Golden Horn. Anadolu Kavağı sits on the upper Bosphorus, near where the strait flows out to the Black Sea.

That trip, while incredibly lovely and well-worth taking, is in all the guidebooks. The real lesser-known adventure is -- actually -- along the Golden Horn! Ferries ply this smaller waterway slowly and somewhat infrequently (once an hour, I believe?) stopping in the atmospheric neighborhoods of Fener and Balat and near the ruins of the old city walls at Avyansaray before ending up in Eyüp, home to one of Islam's holiest mosques and shrines; a beautiful, rambling hillside cemetery; and the Pierre Loti Cafe overlooking it all.
