When I traveled to Peru I was terrified of Lima and tried my best to avoid it (going by the countless don't-go-there's I'd heard from countless backpackers). I was so scared/worried/depressed when it turned out I had to stay overnight there and tried to get straight the hostel as soon as I possibly could so I could hide out. When I dared to venture out I found a feeling of pure disgust that so many people could say so many terrible things about the place- it was beautiful!

The Plaza de Armes was stunning, I ate the best pasta of my life at a little place called Ella's Place (or Ellen's Place?), people were friendly, there were cute little bakeries all over, huge markets, Chinatown...what the hell are people talking about? I stayed for a few days and was sad to leave, and I definitely plan on going back to (hopefully) live for 6 months and take Spanish lessons in Lima!

I don't know what Lima other people saw but I stayed in Centro and I had a fantastic time. Maybe some of these "travelers" need to open up their minds and not disregard a place as "crap" just because some guidebook says it.

I went for two weeks back in may of 2007, i stood for a month. It is not the perfect city but you really get to find some jewels in Lima; the churches took my breath away; they used melted gold to paint the inside walls of those churches. Some balconies that you can unique in Las Americas and can only be found in Sevilla Spain and middle east. don't me talk about their cuisine, it is amazing!. Now stay away from buses... too crowded, so ride taxis they are so cheap, and do not flash yourself as a tourist, they don't like that, they don't like flashy people but laid back the way the are.

Great article Alix! I did a post on my blog about Lima as well, as I was one of those that initially wanted to bypass the city, but somehow ended up having to see it and enjoying it! I did miss some of the places you mentioned here, so it will be worth revisiting Lima again for that reason! Nice work!

Great article, Alix. I had the pleasure of spending 5 days in Lima a couple months ago. I'm so psyched that Parque el Olivar made it in here! Very nice place for an evening stroll.

I wholeheartedly agree with this post! I was warned that Lima was filthy and dangerous and I would most certainly be the victim of more than one petty crime.
In reality, I spent 3 amazing days exploring the city, from the ruins of Pachacamac to the great music in Barranco and street cafes off the main plaza in the city center, and never felt unsafe.

This is great - disproving the comments of negative people who don't know what they're talking about to begin with. Peru's on my list. Thanks for the info.
