Many of the places listed are not considered "off the beaten track" anymore, at least not in the original sense. And PLEEEASE...don't say Bangkok "MEANS" Khao San Road....That would only be true for largely ignorant souls who have no idea about the city. Undeniably, Khao San is a part of Bangkok, but certainly doesn't represent it. For the greatest part it's a safe haven for insecure / clueless travellers and about as representative of the real Thailand as a BigMac would be...

Hidden places in SE Asia? Man, the list could go on and on....here's a guide I wrote a while back to a large, beautiful and totally untouristed island called Koh Rong, off the coast of Cambodia.

Thanks for thinking of me in your piece! I found the isles of Trang to be very mellow and relatively pristine. There are four dozen or so of them but some (or parts of some) are off-limits, including isles surrounding Phetra and Laoliang, as far as I know, because private companies received concessions to gather birds' nests (a Chinese delicacy) from the cliffs. Probably good to get a local guide who can tell you for sure.
