The journey from Nong Khiew out East to Sam Neua and Vieng Xai is also a great experience. The mountainous scenery around Sam Neua is breathtaking and Vieng Xai is so incredibly interesting and different to everywhere else I visited in Laos (and I was there for a while) - the Pathet Lao caves, limestone scenery scattered with red plants (can't remember what they were called) to symbolise the blood lost during the wars or a game of patong with some locals. An amazingly lovely place and completely scarce of tourists despite the amount of important history that went on there. Great educational and informative tours of the caves are provided by incredibly friendly and knowledged local guides.

Great read...I loved your description of Oudomxay in particular. Somehow it really captured what it was like to be there, and why you went. I was through that part of the world last year. I missed Oudomxay, but traveled up to Ponsavanh and into Vietnam via Veng Xai. Reading this makes me want to go back.

I loved this guide too - it shows how MatadorTrips is different from any other travel site on the web - there are no luxury hotels in Phongsali - these guides are for travelers who really love to get beyond their comfort zones.
