Been to all of these cities and they are absolutely excellent - particulary Sarajevo and Mostar. I would add Zagreb to the list as well.

Been to Sarajevo. Outstanding city. Highly recommended. At times doesn't feel like Europe, but in a pleasant way. If you wear appropriate attire, and if you're extremely polite and patient (and lucky), you may be able to get a guard to show you around the old mosque in the main part of Sarajevo. Survived the siege without damage. Inside are colorful carpets donated from many Muslim countries. The guard will want to talk to you about Islam for a while.

Mostar was less satisfying. Great scenery. Excellent view from the mosque minaret, worth the small charge to get in. Bridge also quite appealing. Overall, though, the town has far too much of a "tourist trap" feel. I was there in late spring/early summer before the real tourist season begins in earnest. Would recommend avoiding unless you have keen interest in bridges, the Yugoslav war, or weird World War II paraphernalia/kitsch.

Not on this list, but I also recommend Vukovar. It's in Croatia but directly across the river from Serbia. A must-see if you want to learn more about the war. Little or no tourist infrastructure, so be resourceful. Make it a day trip. I recommend visiting the hospital (Vesna Bosanac, who is something of a Croatian national hero, still works there.), the Catholic church, and the Ovcara killing fields.

Sweet Valerie, thanks for this. I haven't made it much into Eastern Europe yet, but definitely on the radar. I will keep these tips handy.
