Great article. I'm hoping to make it out to New York sometime next year. There are other discount passes you can get like the New York CityPASS (http://www.citypass.com/new-york) and the Go Card (http://www.smartdestinations.com/new-york-attractions-and-tours/_d_Nyc-p1.html). Will all the different passes, seems like it just comes down to deciding what you want to see and going from there.

Great article!

Nice tips Matt. Having been here 2 months now, we've gotten good at finding free/budget things to do (Frommer's NYC Free and Dirt Cheap guide has been pretty helpful in that regard too). I disagree on Central Park being the city's best. I much prefer Prospect Park in Brooklyn. You actually feel more like you're in a park.

These tips are Manhattan centric, but here are a few Brooklyn tips:

- in Park Slope, Brooklyn, Union Market always has great and plentiful samples and the hugest cheese selection (that's not budget, but it's fun, if you're a cheese lover, to browse the aisle).

- Brooklyn Botanic Garden - free all day Tuesdays and Saturdays between 10-noon. While there go wander around Prospect Park and let me know if you like it better than Central Park!

- if you want to see a Broadway or off-Broadway show, go to TKTS for discounted same-day tix (up to 50%). The booth in Times Square always has a huge line, but there's another one in downtown Brooklyn. I'm willing to bet there's no line there.

One more Manhattan tip:

- probably the coolest (and free) museum is the De La Vega museum in the East Village. Not really sure you can call it a museum, it's more of a shop where you can buy lots of his work, but there are displays too that aren't for sale. You can spend a good chunk of time just browsing around and chuckling at his funny logos.

Excellent tips and all very useful. One thing to note, however, if you want to get free tickets to Letterman, you have to call months in advance.

Unfortunately, even a day you planned to be free will end up costing you a bit in New York. There's almost no way to not spend money.
