I assure you, Gen Y'ers like me have no idea what to make of our country either. We were brought up on the tail end of tradition (which to me is around the 1990s) but at present, despite the government's efforts, it's all about importing other cultures - Western, Japanese, and now Korean - and i dare say most born after the Millenium like my siblings will know nothing about our history and culture except British colonialism and "the struggle for independence".

Singapore's such a puzzle. It's still SE Asia, but coated in an exterior of everything we think of as "Western consumer culture." I spent 5 days there but it was at the tailend of a 3-month trip, so I didn't have much ganas to explore. Hope to get back some day.
