My family moved to Asheville, N.C when I was five. Wasn't considered a college town back then....just a beautiful Appalachian spot with the Blue Ridge in my backyard. Best birthday party I ever had when I was 10...6 good friends slipping up and down Sliding Rock, a piece of smooth granite on the Davidson River. That was before life guards and fancy changing rooms. Another swimmer would perch themselves at a spot where they would grab your leg and spin you towards the waiting, cold, deep, clear water. The ultimate natural water park !

Jonathan,

Lake Placid was on my short list, but I went with Ithaca instead. Mistake?

A visit to Port Angeles and the Olympic National Park could be combined with a drive down south along the Oregon Coast...beautiful! Great storm watching...

What about Lake Placid NY? It is the jumping off point to the 6 million-acre Adirondack State Park?

Good call, Heather. Sedona should definitely be #1 in the followup article! What other towns did I miss, people?

Itaca: I lived in NYC for about 10 years before I went there...then ended up camping there a lot! Loved it. Fourth of July is really fun in that area.

Hal- Fantastic article! I've been to three of these cities--Asheville, Ithaca, and Marathon--and agree that they're all interesting in their own right while serving as "stone's throw" gateways to exceptional wilderness areas. Thanks for highlighting these beautiful places.
