I threatened to call the tourism minister and it seems that the offiical in question didn't want to be held responsible for getting a politician out of bed at three in the morning. As with many things in Kyrgyzstan, who you know or appear to know counts for an awful lot. That said, when I looked at getting a visa extension in Bishkek, it was more expensive than paying the fine and getting a replacement back home. In the end I didn’t get charged. Whenever people ask us about Central Asia, we recommend - it has beautiful mountains, friendly people, CBT is a great organization and the markets are great. Good memories. Our experience extending our tourist visa in Karakol was not so pleasant (official took off on a bender in Bishkek, leaving us fretting), but we managed and have another story to tell.
