Great post and insight on the Inca Trail! Machu Picchu was one of the most memorable experiences I've ever head, especially with Inca Trail Tours.

"ever since 2000 it has been made impossible to do the Inca Trail as a solo traveler"
Why? illegal?
everyone advises against trekking solo in lots of places where it is easy (and far more pleasant) to do so.

Cheers!

Would love to give up office work and do this trip myself!

Just came from the Inca Trail and had a wonderful experience. Is a great treck with a regular level of difficulty. Basically, you dont have to be an athlete do it!

I would like to recommend the local outfitter I used, which was great price and excellent quality service: info@chasquibus.com

Hi Mary,
I did the Inca trail about 9 months ago and It depends entirely on how confident you are on your feet. If your elderly, haven't done much rough rock walking then I'd go for ankle support.. if your experienced walking up and down mountains and confident on your feet then no ankle support is fine.
I took my north face 'mens hedgehog' trainers with no ankle support and had no problems what so ever.

Hi Mary,

While I haven't trekked the trail, I have done other hikes in the area, and I feel you can't go wrong with ankle support. However, I'm sure what it really comes down to is personal preference. What do you wear hiking elsewhere?

I will be hiking the Inca trail in May and have heard conflicting advice about footwear. I have heard boots with ankle support are a must. Then I have heard that the lighter on your feet you are the better and to wear trainers. Any advice from those of you who have done it? Thanks! Mary
