Heather,

Monsoon is wonderful despite the danger of falling into some sewage canal, or into some deep ditch.
In our locales, we remember the places where there is sewage canal, or deep ditch, or anything that takes one to nether world without any pain. So we don't generally fall into these. Moreover, they remain through our lifetime. and we we view them long-term, if you will, eternity.

Newborns and foreigners fall into these.

But then, after a brief stay here and one harmless fall into some ditch, folks will have that eternity perspective.

I agree with Dave about avoiding monsoon season. City sewage systems often can't handle the amount of rain, and sewage often ends up floating into the streets. In Mumbai waters have gotten neck deep before, and roads can be much more dangerous during floods.

I lived in Pakistan for three years, and I can say the monsoon wasn't necessarily 'heart lightening' for most people. When the rain starts, it's a nice break from the heat, but then it just turns the weather humid and sticky. I actually preferred dealing with the dry heat of May and June than the flooding and humidity of July, August and September.

If you do go to India in summer, the best places to go are mountain towns and hill stations where you won't be affected much by the monsoon and it won't be 120 degrees.

I was in New Zealand on the first month of my RTW trip in Dec 07, asking the occasional Indian person I met about whether my plans to reach their country around May/June were ideal - always "no" was the answer, exactly because they'd be heading into Summer, and I'd be so hot, it'd be hard to enjoy sightseeing.

I had a taste of this when I hit Bodhgaya, and especially Varanasi with its 42C temperatures. I dared not go further south, but instead, headed for the mountains in the north (didn't make it as far as Leh though).

And I was told businesses in Goa basically shut down for one month of the year - June maybe?

There is some reason NOT to go during the monsoon. Disease is much more prevalent. As a travel you might be lonely because there will be no other tourists around. Also it raining so you won't see much!
Overall you are much better to follow the weather. You can read this article:

Has some where maps and correct time of year for an extended trip to India.

Fabulous article Mariellen! I've fallen in love with India, even though I've never been. It's such a colourful country! Shantaram and The White Tiger are great novels to get inspired to visit too!
