Commenting on this post a year and a half later some things have changed. Fortunately, barrio chino is still alive and kicking - albeit much more populated now; stores have popped up everywhere, a huge corporate style restaurant has opened, taking some business away from the dozen or so other spots. But have no fear, the counter in Asia Oriental market still serves up the best won ton soup I have ever had.

The city in general has advanced a lot in many ways - Santa Fe now goes two ways!!! But its always nice to read back to what people enjoyed a year, two years ago and to see whats happened to maintain its low-key status and what has blown up into a tourist attraction. For the most part, the places you named in this article have stayed what they were meant to be, barrio-local dives and delicacies.

I am absolutely gobsmacked that nobody mentioned La Confiteria Ideal on Suipacha. It's a fabulous fin de siecle cafe downstairs and upstairs (most afternoons) there's a traditional tango milonga. (It's shown extensively in "The Tango Lesson" by Sally Potter and "Tango".) Lots of incredible wood panelling, stained glass, waiters in white coats, etc.
And then there's the wonderful tango scene.
This is really worth the visit.

This article is perfect timing - my husband and I expect to arrive in Buenos Aires in a few weeks (depends how long it takes to travel through Paraguay). I've been so looking forward to seeing BA for myself...and now I've got a cheat sheet to help me get started. Thank you!

Great article on one of the most underrated cities. Buenos Aires has enough culture to keep you busy for months and months. Has anyone tried Al Carbon? It's right on Avenida Florida. I had a great experience there. Also, as touristy as it can be, Cafe Tortoni can't be missed.
