As a former student at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, I always opted for the Colorado Pass (Keystone, Breck, Vail, Beaver Creek and A-Basin). I love those mountains but you're right, somtimes breath of fresh air is in order. On the one hand, buying a season pass often negates the high prices--so long as you get in as many days on the slopes as possible--but the I-70 traffic and loads of tourists are great reasons to look elsewhere. These are a couple of great tips. If you simply can't get out that far, Loveland Ski Area is also a nice alternative. It's close to Denver but doesn't see as large of crowds as the major resorts and once you become familiar with the area, it can be a real gem for backcountry riding.

Ahhhh!! I have been in Thailand for a year and am having serious snow withdrawals! My snowboad must be so lonely without me :(

Awesome, Mark! I'm a big fan of Salida as well. Take a run down Christmas Tree for me if you have the chance. :)

Hal, thanks for confirming my good sense. I have skied many of the large ski areas, but always feel like a member of a herd. I first skied Monarch three years ago, enjoyed it and the Salida area so much that I moved there. Now, I can ski Monarch at least once a week. It is a small ski area, with great snow, never get bored.

Chris, I'm really glad you found the information useful. Riding these two mountains is definitely something to look forward to for next season. Maybe I'll see you there.

Sweet article, great info. I haven't made it down to Wolf Creek or Monarch but am looking forward to riding these mountains eventually. I'm sure the vibe will be far more chill, and I didn't realize just how much cheaper these resorts were. Thanks for the info!

Informative, interesting. Hal Amen's prose is as refreshing as that wonderful-sounding powder ... I don't need $265 sunglasses to enjoy the read. Thanks for a wonderful article!
