Good article; I've been dreaming of going out to this region for some time and now I feel like I just have to. Anyone have any tips for a month long surf trip?....places to stay or friends I should meet?

I've been to San Sebastian, very pretty town, tons of drinking establishments! Unfortunately the weather was crap the whole time I was there.

Thanks for the additions soultravelers3! I'll have to look up those towns.

I absolutely adore Andalusia, but I will never understand why so many Brits and Northern Europeans go to it in summer when it is the worst possible time to be there.

Summer is the time to go to Northern Spain! All of the places you mentioned are great, but Galicia ( in summer) is by far one of the greatest gems of Europe. I don't surf, but there certainly are the prettiest and least populated beaches in Spain or Europe (or anywhere for that matter). Many look like the Caribbean!

Love the food in San Sebastian and the Guggenheim building ( not the art collection) alone is worth a trip to Bilbao, but both get VERY crowded in summer ( San Sebastian extremely so since all of Madrid packs up and spends August there etc).

I suggest going further west to Galicia and Asturias if one wants to get off the well worn path and away from crowds.

If not, then don't miss Santilliana---one of the prettiest towns in Europe and near the greatest cave art in the world!

Nice article man. Spain is still the best place I have been to, never had much luck with waves there though. Being goofy, I would love love love to surf Mundaka. Maybe one day.

Great article, I think it sums up the major places on the northern coast nicely. Personally I think Santander is quite beautiful, both in town and on the coast. If you go a little further west you'll find Gijon, and I'm not sure what the surf is like but its yet another beautiful beach stop. I'm happy to see someone highlighting northern Spain for a change from Barcelona, Madrid, Sevilla, etc. :)
