I'm a Nanaimo girl transplanted to the East Coast, so seeing Nanaimo here made me happy! :) If you go, take the Dinghy Dock Ferry to Protection Island, eat at the first floating pub in Canada, walk around the island and feed the ducks at the pond, then:

1) If you're super-adventurous, plan this ahead (!) and wait for the lowest tide possible, then cross the strait to Newcastle Island by foot. Prepare to get very wet, very sandy, and odd stares. It's super-fun, though.
2) If you're not visiting at the right time of day/month, take the regular ferry to Newcastle Island, right nearby. The entire island is a giant park. In the summer, play giant checkers.
3) Watch the Bathtub Race if you're there at the right time of year.

So many more suggestions... now I'm tempted to write an article of my own, haha.

Thanks for all the comments guys!! I love British Columbia and would have liked to have added a whole bunch of other places to the list. Teebird - I totally agree with you about the sunshine coast, its amazing. I had Powel river and Lund on the list at one point but with so many awesome places here it somehow just didnt make it:( Natalie - Uculet is great in the summer but there is something special about it in the winter too. In the winter there are no crowds, the surfing is better, and the storm watching is spectacular.

Squamish! An hour drive north and excellent rock climbing/hiking! I've seen them filming TV shows there because it looks similar to Alaska :)

Thanks for this post Meaghan! Ucluelet sounds amazing, although I'd probably head there in summer, not now. I have never heard of Haida Gwaii, so it peaks my curiosity as to all that B.C. offers. I'll get there eventually!

OOOOO! I was as giddy as a school girl to see this article. I live in Kelowna, which is about 20 minutes from Pentiction, which is about 5 times as large and, in my opinion 5 times better ;) (what can I say, couldn't resist plugging my hometown). Would definently recommend all these places, West Coast Trail is one of the best in the whole world but is definently for the expert hiker... tuff stuff. Hope some of ya come out here to the interior, and to those who are going to the Olympics welcome to BC!

Thanks for this awesome list of 6 alternative BC destinations! How were you able to keep the list to just 6 destinations? I know I couldn't do it. Beautiful British Columbia, how we love you!

Great article however " Victoria, about 4 hours away by ferry" - not totally correct. the actual time on the Ferry is only 90 minutes followed by about 30 minutes drive to get to downtown Victoria.

I would also suggest a visit to The Sunshine Coast, north-ish up the coastline from Vancouver. Especially a stop at the village of Gibsons AND only a 40 minute BC Ferry ride from West Vancouver. Local artisans, great seafood, kayaking - beautiful!

I haven't done nearly enough exploring in Canada, but I definitely love Victoria and highly recommend it to anyone who will be near Vancouver.

I was about to get angry at this list because, like most "Places to see in British Columbia" it seemed like it was going to completely overlook the mainland. Good job on this list. Revelstoke is one of my favourite places in BC.
