this article was so moving... I love it how Southern Japanese are so much more relaxed and closer to their roots. Got to admit that we still have wonderful omatsuiri around Tokyo (well at least we do in Kanagawa) but nothing beats this! arigatou!

Maybe you can drive and I'll hitch a ride, even pay for the gas; that way I can drink AWAMORI with the Village Chief and get the rest of the story!
Thanks for viewing and your comments.

Cheers,
Ryukyu Mike

That was a great capture of the traditions of the Ryukyuan Religion! It's interesting that just after beginning my readings and research on their traditional religion, you have the opportunity to experience it first hand! I will be sure to check it out next year! Thanks!

Pele,
Thank you! Okinawa is often called the Hawaii of Japan. Come visit sometime so you can do a comparison.

I love the pics-- they remind me of Hawaii (where I'm from). There seems to be more of a sense of community in that society than what we've got going on here in the states. The ritual is beautiful IMO.

Hal, Sabina and Carlo, thanks to all. I'll be going back next year and the year after. Next year the mountain portion doesn't take place (only every other year), I should have explained better.
Hopefully, there's more dancing and sake drinking going on when the mountain climbing part is eliminated. I'll check it out and let you know, for sure!
