When I was told we were going to see penguins in South Africa at Boulders I thought they were pulling my naive Yank leg...not the species of wildlife associated with that part of the world. Then I remembered that 80 % of penguin species don't live in the poles.

I still have my Boulders National Park ballcap. I could of sat on the beach watching those charming birds all day. Very toney neighborhood they call home ;)

Love the piece and photos!

Made me want to fly around the world in search of those adorable little smelly birds. I'm going to Argentina in December and will have to catch Punta Tombo.

The marathon was challenging, inspiring, beautiful and unforgettable! I ran in Goretex trail shoes (Salomon) and used Yak Trax while on a glacier we climbed twice. The course was mostly muddy (the shoe-sucking variety) and rocky. We spent three days in Buenos Aires and then flew to Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world. From there we spent two days crossing the Drake Passage and then we were in Antarctica! :)

Super price! How was the marathon? Do you run it in regular shoes or with icespikes or something? Does that take off from Ushuaia or someplace else?

You can land on Antarctica for cheaper than $10K. I ran the Antarctica marathon in March with Marathon Tours and a two week trip (including a week on the continent with landings twice a day) ran around $6K; I've been told it's one of the cheaper ways to get to the continent (running the marathon isn't required). The penguins there haven't learned to be afraid of humans, so if you sit still and observe them, they will approach you to check you out :)
