paul,

perhaps no.5 was not necessary. i certainly may be selling the readers of matador short. if so, i apologize.

i said what i did, though, because i have heard many people do such. the term 'noble savage' refers to the reification of native americans to can-do-no-wrong status. for example, espousing the idea that any and every native american was environmentally friendly and worked the earth with perfect devotion to its eternal health. some did, and some didn't. it's quite a simplistic stereotype to set them up as perfect examples of environmental care vis-a-vis our present treatment of the environment.

this is too common with tibetans, and i think it sells them short of their humanity, and their personality. some, i think, view anything done or said by tibetans as unquestionably wise. certainly there are many tibetan cultural and social practices that would fall into this category. but some too should be questioned, just as some practices of every culture deserve to be questioned.

having said that, perhaps i should expect the best in people...

Hey,
Good article, but is number 5 really necessary? Apart from that good advice. I've been around the edges of Tibet, Gansu, Qinghai, Sichuan and Litang in Sichuan is probably the coolest place I've visited.

Excellent post. I recommend trekking to the village of Yubeng, accessible via Deqin in NW Yunnan Province. There's a Tibetan pilgrimage route there, with many holy sites, and no restrictions on foreign visitors because it's technically outside of the TAR.
