I'm uruguayan and i think that your article is very accurate. There is something that foreigners should know: in Ciudad Vieja, you should avoid empty streets or far from pedestrians (mainly the borders) just to be careful. "Planchas" are someting new for us.
Also, i recommend to visit the Parque Rodò (Rodo Park) at dusk in summertime (december-february).

It's with bacon (in Europe bacon is associated with Denmark, in the Americas with Canada, God knows why).

Great article!

I think it's unfortunate that many travellers think of Uruguay as a day trip to take while in Argentina. It's a beautiful country and definitely tranquilo...and the chivitos son deliciosos.

Any idea why there's one called chivito canadiense?

#1...Seems like common sense; yet, unfortunately it is a common misconception. Different countries, geography and demographics...yet many assume these unique spaces/places are the same. #2...Could you do a side article on, "How to Drink Mate"? Excuse my amateur 101 status. But, I've had two bombillas since 2000 & I have yet to master the drink / slurp. :0 #6...While the music is in an 80's time warp...does the same go for the architecture? Vehicles?

Thank-you Dominic for yet another highly informative article.
I so enjoy (vicariously) sharing your travels and reading about local customs and culture. Once again leaving me anxious to visit and to partake in the various cuisine. (fried grasshoppers aside)
Happy New Year!
