What the Wrestling Cholita can teach us about discrimination in Bolivia
MORE RECENTLY I’VE BEEN EDUCATING MYSELF about the First Nations people in Canada, uncovering some history, learning about their plight at the hands of colonialism (and many would argue attempts at cultural genocide). I know about similar histories with other western countries like the United States, Australia, and New Zealand. But I’ve never really considered the indigenous peoples of Latin America. This short film isn’t just about a woman wrestler in Bolivia, it speaks volumes about the discrimination that indigenous people there have faced over the years. She says it’s getting better though, with much credit to Bolivia’s president for the past decade, Evo Morales (who is himself indigenous).
