“THIS COUNTRY HAS NEVER SEEN a movement from our generation. They have never seen a movement from the children of the Internet. They haven’t the slightest clue what we are capable of….”
It was perhaps just a matter of time until the hacktivist group Anonymous joined the #occupywallstreet movement. This October 4 video follows on the group’s announcement, then unannouncement, of their intention to bring down Wall Street on Monday (they didn’t).
That the American spring has not received nearly the coverage that recent protests in the rest of the world so gleefully did was a fact not lost to even the China Daily newspaper. That the Chinese media are not immune to charges of suppressing coverage to protect their elites does not detract from the fact that, in this instance, the pot may indeed be identifying the kettle correctly.
It is clear that an idea is beginning to snowball, pushed by a generation that can circumvent the institutional censorship of the likes of Fox News and other major networks. It’s still an idea too big to be easily articulated in the weak and limiting language of taxes and bailouts and an ideology birthed of Keynesian economics and the free-for-all capitalist project. But god help a whole bunch of people if the idea finds the words it needs to make demands.
“They haven’t the slightest clue what we are capable of. We masters of information. We conductors of thought. The tipping point has arrived.”
