Popular Cities

Many travelers to Japan visit Kyoto for its historical, cultural, and artistic appeal.

This ancient city is home to no fewer than 2,000 religious sights and dozens of other scenic vistas. Kyoto has so many perfectly preserved sights that it can be difficult to decide what to see. Popular attractions include the Golden Temple, Kyoto Imperial Palace, and Kiyomizu Shrine. But there are less common experiences to be had as well like dining on a kaiseki meal, strolling along the Philosopher’s Walk, or sighting a geisha in the city’s narrow back streets.

Here at Matador, you’ll find tips for finding your inner zen in Kyoto, whether that’s meditating at one of the temples or eating amazing vegetarian food. Have you experienced Kyoto? Share your travel or expat tale with us.
