Sapporo, Hokkaidō

Sapporo has come a long way since 1857. In that year, the city population was 7; today it is almost 2 million.

And each February for 2 weeks, the population grows by another 2 million. Visitors flock to Sapporo during this month to experience the famous Sapporo Snow Festival, where blocks of ice are transformed into works of art. In addition to astounding ice castles, African safari animals, and ship replicas emerging from powdery white surroundings, travelers get to experience Sapporo’s beer and ramen.

Matador member Turner Wright has shared his experience in Sapporo gazing at ice sculptures and making friends with locals. Have you visited or lived in Sapporo? We want to hear from you!
