Ma’dabā, Madaba

Mentioned in the Bible, the small, largely Christian town of Madaba is mosaic heaven.

The oldest known map of the Holy Land is a sixth century mosaic preserved in the floor of the Greek Orthodox Church of St George, but there are hundreds of other mosaics scattered around town in churches, homes, and in the Madaba Museum.

There is an interesting and well-arranged archaeology walk through town that takes in the highlights, and it’s also easy to get to Mount Nebo – from where Moses is said to have seen the Promised Land before dying.
