The capital city of the rich state of Qatar, Doha is having a ton of money thrown at it, not least because it will host many of the venues for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Wander through Souq Waqif, the restored Arabic market quarter where you can can even buy falcons; promenade - or rollerblade - along the long, curving corniche; check out the ceremonial swords of the Weaponry Museum; or explore the landscaped Rumeila Park, with its outdoor theatre, art gallery, and play areas.

It's easy to escape the mind-boggling architecture and the shopping malls and head into the desert - not far away are the Singing Sand Dunes, where if the wind blows over the sand just right, a strange humming sound is generated.
