Salta is a beautiful city -- there's no way around it. Smack in the middle of Argentine wine country, there are many day trips available to see salt flats, mountains, and desert. This northern region is home to the National Park of los Cardones, indigenous, protected cacti that can grow for 500 years, some of which are as large as trees and have as many branches.

Salta has more than 460,000 residents and is also home to Matador editor Leigh Schulman who, with her husband, runs an artist in residence program called Cloudhead Art Foundation there.
