I’ve always had a soft spot for making up the etymology and history behind certain phrases. Sadly, the rise of Google and its accessibility during conversations has given gullible victims the chance to crosscheck my bullshit. I’ll keep trying but recently my theory on where the term ‘piping hot’ came from was blown out of the water by sneaky smart phone users on a balcony in Colombo, Sri Lanka. I maintained that piping hot was coined when hot water first ran through piping networks and some unlucky chap got burnt and started using the phrase. I was wrong, but you’re online so Google it and find out the true origin for yourself…or don’t and ride with me on this one.
