5 Reasons Why I Only Date Polyglots

Couples
by Joanna Franco Jan 5, 2015

IF I SPEAK four languages (granted, I barely speak English sometimes, so no bragging here), why should my significant other only speak one? Let’s take a step back and think about the makings of a good relationship. The dusty old saying goes that “opposites attract.” To me, I take that as opposite languages, as in not the same language; as in you need to speak another language in addition to English for things to work out. It’s become a basic standard that has weeded out a lot of the lameos from my love life. Of course, there are few exceptions, but for the most part, dating a multilingual person is ideal for the following reasons:

NO NEED FOR VOLUME CONTROL

One of the biggest perks about dating someone who speaks another language is that, depending where you are, you won’t have to whisper sweet nothings to each other. The key to this point is that you should be learning their language, or vice versa, so that you can avoid using your “barely there” voice, and say sexy things out loud and proud like the international boss we all know you are.

THEY JUST GET LIFE

If your honey bun is into languages, they’re sharpening a tool that brings them knowledge of the world existing outside of their comfort bubble. I’ve noticed that those who make the effort to keep more than one language in their life are passionate about understanding multiple cultures, and various kinds of people. They are, therefore, instantly more experienced and open-minded at life. Bottom line: they’re keepers.

MISTAKES ARE ADORABLE

Forget all the regular nerves that boring ol’ first dates bring; by adding the polyglot factor in the mix you are guaranteeing a night filled with vulnerability. The truth is, when you learn a new language, you’re throwing your guard out the window because you’re bound to make mistakes. No one wants to sound dumb in front of their major crush, but in my opinion, nothing brings you closer to your future boo than sounding a bit doofy with an adorable accent.

OOHHH LA LA, SEXY TIME

Let’s be real: moaning in a foreign language is so much sexier.

BECAUSE I’M OBSESSED

Lastly, being a lover of travel and of understanding people from all corners of the world, I choose to surround myself with those who can selfishly help me up my language street cred. You can try every language app under the sun, buy every phrase book in Barnes and Noble, but nothing comes close to learning a foreign language like falling in love with a polyglot.
