Going blackface is a highly questionable practice deeply rooted in racist humour, but this time, it came from a place of solidarity.
Deinster SV, a German soccer club, posted the photoshopped image on its Facebook page after two team members, who are Sudanese refugees, were victims of racial attacks on Easter Sunday. One of them, Emad was “insulted and beaten”.
The caption accompanying the image reads: “Violence against refugees is pathetic […] Emad and Amar — you are one of us, like any other member of the team, and we are pleased that you are with us!!!”
Although some were unsure about the team’s gesture, Deinster SV spokesman Frank Sandmann told NBC News that it was well-intentioned and is meant to make a stand against racism. A cause we should all get behind.
