THE OSCARS ARE THIS WEEKEND, and, unfortunately, they are being decried for the second year running for the total lack of non-white nominees in the acting roles. And if you’ve heard of this controversy, you’ve probably heard of the main argument against it: that there are no roles for non-white actors.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver does a great job of hilariously dispelling this myth: The nominees, as the video says, “are whiter than a Yeti in a snowstorm fighting Tilda Swinton,” but there are still plenty of roles for people of color that are still, for some nonsense reason, filled by white actors and actresses. Hollywood’s legacy of this type of racism stretches back to its beginning, and there’s just no excuse for it.
