Not many people know that undocumented immigrants have joined the U.S. military. But in order to illustrate this incomplete picture we have of undocumented immigrants, website Latino Rebels recently publicized the story of Marine Lance Corporal Jose Gutiérrez. Gutiérrez came to the United States as an orphan from Guatemala. He managed to receive asylum and was placed with a foster family, who advised him to join the military as a means of gaining citizenship. He died in Iraq a year after joining the Marines.
