WE ALL HAVE travel illusions. Preconceived images of what it would be like to spend one year living in Ireland, or a few months in Mexico. In our deams we are friends with locals, we can communicate perfectly with everyone, and we are having the time of our live. All those who have travelled extensively know that the reality is quite different from what we usually have in mind. It takes much more than just getting to our destination.

That’s what Gareth Leonard explains perfectly in this video; the efforts it took for him to leave his mark on Brasil and for Brasil to leave its mark on him. For Gareth, the key to a successful trip is “how uncomfortable you’re willing to be” being lonely, reaching out to others, learning the local language, etc.

Give it a watch, reset your expectations, and learn about what it takes to be a traveller.
