The Keepers of Darnley Bay is a stunning visual experience and an insightful look into the local culture that has been entrusted to help protect Canada’s newest protected marine lands. From the YouTube description, “the Anguniaqvia Niqiqyuam Marine Protected Area was created in collaboration with the Inuvialuit, as well as partners from industry, non-governmental organizations, and other stakeholders.” Creating the park is a step toward Canada’s conservationism commitment to protect 5% of marine and coastal areas by 2017.

In the video, we get a glimpse into the lives of the community in Paulatuk, Northwest Territories. It’s a community that still relies heavily on the food they can source from Darnley Bay, and that is experiencing drastic change from encroaching technology. Despite this challenge, the young are still being taught the traditional ways by the elders so they can continue to have the ability to live off the land as they’ve been doing for generations.
