COCKROACHES MUST BE one of the world’s most hated species, one of those no one really likes to see. Then why on Earth would someone decide to build robots that are just like them? For some sci-fi horror movie? No. Those robo-roaches could be the ones finding survivors buried under rubble after disasters.
According to scientists at UC Berkeley, cockroaches are perfect models for rescue robots thanks to their collapsible exoskeleton, which allows them to get into really small spaces. That’s how they get into our homes, but also how their robot versions might find us and notify the rescue team if we happen to be trapped under a collapsed building after an earthquake. And who wouldn’t be happy to see a (robot) cockroach in that situation?
