It looks like the greatest concentration of badasses in the world will be taking place live and on-screen in Nevada City, California, from Jan 14-16. The 2011 Wild & Scenic Film Festival is a collection of vital work and living legends. This year’s special guests include Yvon Chouinard and Gary Snyder. Among the dozens of films to be previewed:

180º South – Surfer and climber Jeff Johnson retraces the epic 1968 journey of Yvon Chouinard and Doug Tompkins, on which they drove, mountain climbed and surfed their way to Chilean Patagonia.

Africa Revolutions Tour – Kayaking film by Tyler Bradt, Rush Sturges and crew who have taken whitewater paddling to a next-level progression. Their team works closely with the Sun Catchers Project, bringing solar cooking ovens and water purification into schools, orphanages and communities in Africa.

The Practice of the Wild – Jim Harrison (my favorite living author) talks / interviews Gary Snyder while hiking around Big Sur.

For those unfamiliar with the Wild and Scenic Film Festival, here’s their mission:

SYRCL’s Wild & Scenic Film Festival inspires people and unites communities to heal the earth.

SYRCL’s Wild & Scenic Film Festival is a call to action. At Wild & Scenic, filmgoers are transformed into a congregation of committed activists, dedicated to saving our increasingly threatened planet. We show environmental and adventure films that illustrate the Earth’s beauty, the challenges facing our planet, and the work communities are doing to protect the environment.
