One irresponsible tourist ruined the Eiffel Tower for everyone yesterday. On Monday, officials closed the popular Parisian monument after a man tried to climb it. He made it pretty far, too. According to reports, the man nearly made it to the highest level of the tower, about 900 feet in the air, where he was found dangling. The reasoning behind his antics aren’t yet known, but it’s probably safe to say there probably wasn’t much logic behind his decision. It’s also unknown how he managed to get past the tower’s security.

Eiffel Tower Forced to Close Temporarily After a Man Attempts to Scale It
Shortly after 5:30 PM, firefighters arrived at the scene and attempted to reach the climber as hundreds watched from below. Together with police negotiators, they eventually persuaded him to come down safely.
During and following the incident, tourists were evacuated from the area. At the time, the Eiffel Tower’s twitter account tweeted, “The Eiffel Tower is currently closed until further notice. To avoid a long wait, we advise our visitors to postpone their visit.” However, the tower reopened earlier this morning.
While the man’s motivations are unknown, perhaps he was trying to follow in “freerunner” James Kingston’s footsteps. In 2015, Kingston evaded security and managed to climb the tower without safety ropes.
