AMERICANS never seem to call themselves “Americans”; instead, they often say they are Irish, Italian, Scottish, German, etc. Although it is a strange thing for Europeans to hear someone who has never set foot in Germany say they are German, there is some truth to this American habit.

The map below created by Maptitude shows the predominant country of ancestry for regions in the United States. Each flag represents a 100 x 100 mile square area and indeed, there are a lot of German and Irish flags!
