Vienna is getting comfortable at the top of the Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) “World’s Most Liveable City” rankings. For the second year in a row, the Austrian capital has taken the top spot, once again pushing Melbourne to the second spot. Although Melbourne prevailed for seven straight years prior to 2018, it seems that Vienna’s here to stay.

To arrive at its results, the EIU measures over 30 factors across five categories, including stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure. Vienna scored 100 percent in four out of five categories, and 96.3 percent in the culture and environment section. Our personal ranking gives it 100 percent in the coffee and sachertorte category.

Vienna was joined at the top of the rankings by Melbourne, followed by Sydney, Osaka, Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto, Tokyo, Copenhagen, and Adelaide. So while Western Europe might be riding high right now, Australia and Canada certainly aren’t too far off.

Also repeating its position is Damascus, Syria, which came in last for the second year in a row. It was joined by Lagos, Nigeria; Dhaka, Bangladesh; Tripoli, Libya; and Karachi, Pakistan, as the world’s 10 least liveable cities.
