AT LEAST 18 PEOPLE HAVE DIED as a result of the Everest avalanche that occurred after the massive earthquake in Nepal last week. This, of course, pales in comparison to the thousands who have died in the Nepal earthquake (the current number is 5,800, but Nepal’s Army Chief believes it could go as high as 15,000), but this is the second year in a row that a deadly avalanche has struck Everest.
Last year, 16 sherpas were killed in an avalanche at the Khumbu Icefall. Tragedy is not a new thing on Everest — hundreds have died on the mountain attempting to climb it — but it is still a shock when catastrophes like this happen. Filmmaker Elia Saikaly made this tribute to this year’s deaths in the Everest avalanche. The footage is harrowing, but it’s worth a watch, if just to see the risk that sherpas and climbers put themselves through to summit the world’s tallest mountain.
