I’m as much of a fan of Breaking Bad as everyone else, but the New Mexico town of Albuquerque is probably getting treated unfairly if all we think about is meth cartels and pizzas on roofs when we think of “The Querq” (which is how I assume Albuquerque residents refer to it).
Instead, we should think of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, a nine-day event featuring 600 hot air balloons, making it the largest festival of its kind in the world. The event has been happening since 1972, and at its peak had over a thousand balloons. They’ve since limited the number due to safety and quality issues.
The event takes place in early October and, should you want to go next year, will be from Saturday, October 4th, to Sunday, October 12th. The final event on their calendar is called the “Farewell Mass Ascension,” which despite its Jonestown-sounding name, sounds (and looks) absolutely amazing.
