Some surveys show that almost half of young white Americans don’t support the Black Lives Matter movement. Many have believed false rumors that the movement was founded with an intention of violence, while others simply believe they are demanding too much too fast.

And yet history shows us that white Americans have always been overly skeptical of movements involving race. In the 1960’s, the majority of Americans also viewed civil rights protests as too violent and too demanding.
