IF YOU’RE LIKE ME you’ve been cutting up those plastic ring things that hold 6-packs of cans together. This is likely because you’ve seen heartbreaking images of marine life like turtles and sea birds who’ve died from getting either caught in the loops or have grown themselves while trapped in them. But even when they’re cut up they still post a huge risk because much of the plastic ends up in the ocean and getting eaten.
Saltwater Brewery — a craft brewery company in Florida whose main customers are surfers, fishermen, and others who love the sea — created these edible, biodegradable, and compostable 6-pack rings. They’re made of wheat and barley, waste from the beer-making process. This is the first of its kind in the beer industry. Let’s hope it catches on.
