This video shows the utter devastation in Homs, previously Syria’s third largest city. In a time when many have hesitated to help Syrian refugees, the video makes clear the violence and destruction that refugees are trying to escape.

Because the video was created by Alexander Pushin, a cameraman for Russian state television, many have called the film propaganda for Russia’s military involvement. But regardless of its original purpose, the video proves that the severity of Syria’s civil war is undeniable.

Over half of Syria’s entire population has fled the country thus far. Meanwhile, much of Europe continues to turn down refugees each day. Last year, Sweeden rejected 80,000 applicants, while Finland expelled 20,000 of the 32,000 applications it received.
