NEARLY 1 OUT OF 3 men in Japan are still virgins in their early 30s. Twenty-three percent of women say sex is bothersome. Eighteen percent of men say they have little interest in sex. With statistics like these, it isn’t surprising that in the past 5 years the population in Japan has shrunk by a million people. However, the major reason for the population dip ultimately comes down to gender inequality and the perception of working mothers. In countries with low gender equality women can’t pursue both a family and a career. Japanese have a word for married women who work: “Oniyome” meaning “Devil Wives.”
