George Ryan loads up the car with some friends and some bikes and roadtrips to Ray’s Indoor Mountain Bike Park in Cleveland, Ohio to beat the winter weather.

Snow, wind and freezing rain coat the ground in the northern latitudes – none of which are great for mountain biking. Instead of hunkering down with a stack of freeride DVDs waiting for spring, it’s time to hit the road to one of several indoor options to ride, climb, surf or even skydive. They may not seem as satisfying as looking out from the top of a first-time ascent or rocketing down a rock-strewn singletrack, but these controlled environments are fun as hell and offer something that a wide, open trail system sometimes lacks: a group of like-minded people from all over in one building.
