GARRETT MCNAMARA IS THE WORLD RECORD holder for the surfing the largest wave ever surfed. And you don’t surf waves that huge without risking getting seriously hurt. And that’s exactly what happened this past Thursday: a winter storm fueled by the El Niño churned up truly massive waves in Mavericks, a surf spot about 2 miles off shore near San Francisco.

McNamara was brave enough to try and surf the waves, but he lost his balance on a 25-footer and skipped down the slope of the wave like a rock before it broke and crashed down on him. McNamara is okay, but he suffered a serious shoulder injury for which he’s having surgery on Monday.
